Treehaus Botanicals first ever skincare product, the Kombucha Face Mask, was originally formulated for personal use to recover from a particularly bad acne outbreak, but after seeing the results, and hearing the feedback from our friends and family, we had to make it publicly available!
Most of you probably already know what Kombucha is. The fermented tea that people either seem to love or hate has after all been around for about 2000 years, but only recently has it made its way into our skincare routines!
The combination of yeast, bacteria, and acids in Kombucha form what’s called a SCOBY, or Symbiotic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast, which is the foundation of Kombucha. The SCOBY itself, a round, mushroom looking organism, and not the Kombucha tea, is the basis of this face mask, making it extra packed with naturally occurring probiotics, vitamins, and antioxidants!
Probiotics in skincare can help to calm skin irritations, as they work with the skin to promote good bacteria and keep the community of organisms or microbes on your skin, also known as the microbiome, healthy and balanced. In combination with the antioxidants, probiotics can help defend the skin against free radicals found in pollution, that cause premature skin ageing, among other skin issues.
The Treehaus Botanicals Kombucha Face Mask contain a proprietary blend of skin calming and purifying essential oils, such as tea tree, lavender, rosemary, bergamot, and rose geranium. Although only added in low quantities, the oils not only add to the effectiveness of the mask, but also add a pleasant aroma.
The carrier oil in the face mask is pure, organic Argan oil, a highly moisturizing oil listed as a zero on the comedogenic scale, meaning it will not clog the pores, and is therefore safe to use even on acne prone skin. In fact, Argan Oil can actually regulate the amounts of sebum on the skin, and promote a smoother complexion!
Other active ingredients include:
– Green Tea, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, and for reducing puffiness with its natural caffeine content
–Lavender, which is both cleansing, calming, antibacterial, and of course, fragrant
–Bentonite Clay, a soothing and protective clay derived from weathered volcanic ash which, in addition to adding texture to the mask and making it easier to apply to the face, also has numerous benefits, such as absorbing impurities on the skin surface, healing acne, eczema, and even wounds, softening the skin, and even making the pores appear smaller!
Directions: the SCOBY is a slippery devil, and on its own almost impossible to apply to the face without it sliding right off. Trust us! That’s why we added Bentonite Clay to keep it in place.
Use one teaspoon of your Treehaus Botanicals Kombucha Face Mask about once a week, a little goes a long way. Apply the mask by gently dapping it on freshly cleaned and dry skin, either on the entire face or problem areas, rather than smearing it on like a moisturizer.
Always do a patch test first before applying any new skincare product to make sure it doesn’t cause a reaction. However, when you’re good to go, apply the mask, and keep on for 10-20 minutes, or however long feels comfortable to you.
You should feel the skin tingling and tightening pleasantly, as the clay dries and the mask does its job.
When you’re ready, remove the mask with a warm, damp washcloth, and rinse with cold water.
Finish up with your usual skincare routine!
